Its been a while since I've posted anything on one of my interests: microhousing! Since the recession hit in 2008, tiny houses (less than 500 square feet) has been growing wildly in popularity. I'm guessing that the next leg down coming soon in the economy (more on that soon) will greatly boost this trend.
I'm very interested in problem-solving generally speaking, and as we begin to transition into Decline (which has already begun of course) I really key in to versatile innovations that may help ease that shift in lifestyle for us all. Learning to live with LESS (Greer coined the term L.E.S.S. as “Less Energy, Space, & Stuff”) is really important, and the Tiny House is a fun trend that will prove very useful in the future.
For example, several contractors and companies are beginning to build comfy tiny homes from completely salvaged materials. Its cheaper, its greener, its win-win all the way around! One thing Greer and other futurists have postulated is that we will be transitioning into a salvage society, having wasted so many of our resources will force us to dig through our own trash for materials that it becomes too expensive to gather otherwise. If you're at the forefront of the salvage movement, you are well ahead of the curve!

And some more innovative design meant to utilize otherwise wasted space in urban areas shows how skinny homes can be inserted between multistory buildings :
Of course, as commented in the article, this type of housing would be for younger and more athletic people. However– affordable housing for just that group in society is a continuing concern that needs better addressing. Plus, the designs are fun, full of ladders and skinny rooms not more than 10 feet wide. Great fodder for the imagination!
