All this last week we've been scrambling to fix things up, decorate, and make our home cozy for our first official visitors: Darcy's parents. They're in their 50s and not able to climb ladders comfortably to sleep in Tiny House lofts, so they're staying in our guest room, which Tad & Darcy have slowly been vacating as they finish up their wee home.
Darcy's parents are homebodies and rarely travel further than 20 minutes from their house, so this is a big deal for them. Darcy is thrilled to host them and have them see all the changes he's made in his life and show off where he lives now. He loves it here and wants his parents to understand why he moved away from upstate New York to relocate so far away. They're a very close family, so its a big deal to make such a move. Now he gets to explain and demonstrate that he's okay– really okay.
He and Tad lived with Darcy's parents for a couple of years, so they're all pretty close and so Tad was also happy to have them visit. 'June' & 'Harold' (as I'll call them) turned out to be very sweet people. June is more reserved and Harry is gregarious, but both are just very easy-going and uncomplicated types for the most part. They thanked Gerick and I for “looking after their boys” and we said 'sure' but really, we're all helping one another here and we emphasized that point.
Their stay is not even going to be a full week. I guess neither of them wanted their routine disrupted for too long– which is strange to me. The plane trip is such a long one, and takes so much out of one, that I won't do cross-country trips anymore for any less than 2 full weeks. It takes a full day just to recover from flying! But– to each his or her own I suppose.
I would be lying if I didn't admit that its kind of fun to show off our new domicile to people. Its no mansion, but its a very nicely situated and comfortable home, with everything anyone could really need and amazing views– not to mention the forest next door and the big yards and the pole barn and such! After years being super-frugal, living in tiny apartments and making do with less space and renting, it feels great to be in charge of a location and create a little world of your own… and then share it with others at times to make their lives a little less cramped in turn.
It should only be 2 weeks max before the Tiny House is finished and Tad & Darcy are out in their own place. Then I can relax a bit more and enjoy some real privacy after weeks of sharing space. I don't mind doing this for a while, but I long for my own home again after so many weeks of being busy and accommodating. I talk to myself and otherwise overly enjoy my solitude too much to do well without it for long!
