Scrambling To Get Ready For Housewarming

(Before It's News)

Its been a crazy weekend. Gerick and I went to the Scandinavian Festival in Astoria. It was really cute, actually– though not something I would want to do more than once or twice a decade. I think I prefer the Scottish Festivals because of the music. I don't like the Germanic oom-pah-pah stuff. I do want to learn more about the Norwegian side of my heritage (from my father) but that folk music drives me– well, AWAY. It drives me away. I like the costumes and mythology and history– not so much the auditory portion of the proceedings!

Tad & Darcy went to the beach for a day-long date and had a good time as well.

Late Saturday and Sunday, however, was all about housework and yardwork. I painted 3 short bookcases. One mint green for my bedroom, and 2 sunny yellow for the office/guest room. Then I had to get them situated and finish unpacking yet more boxes of books. Its official now: there are only a handful of boxes left to unpack from the move (and all of them are either in the garage or the bedroom closets awaiting a time when they have places to go.) All the books in the guest room are fantasy and sci-fi, and all the decorations for the walls and eventual shelves are to share that theme as well. Lady knows we have enough art and dust collectors to work that angle easily!

In addition, I did some weeding around the perimeter of the front yard. By hand– because we don't do poison. That's some rough exercise, let me tell you! Meanwhile, Gerick and the guys have been tearing apart the area around the fountain in the front yard; shoveling up the lava rock for areas where its needed in the back yard (due to mud issues much of the year), buying mulch and weed barrier fabric, buying new pumps, cleaning out the fountain and cascading ponds, etc. Gerick is hoping to get it mostly cleaned up and running, with the ornamental trees planted, before Saturday afternoon and the looming housewarming party. They made a big dent in that as well as in the tiny house finishing touches, but we may not quite make it…

Meanwhile, our incubator has been successfully helping to hatch 15 young chicks! Nearly a dozen in last 24 hours! Which is crazy! But I think we have our next batch of layers and fryers lined up. I'm so happy to have a place for them out in the barn/coop so I don't have them in my house anymore. MUCH easier I must say! They should all be out there by party time as well, so people can enjoy their adorableness in stride!

Finally, it appears temps will be near 100 in Portland area by then– and we'll be in the mid-90s at least! So… we're shifting the outdoor area to be more about water and cooling off than a fire later. I've notified my guests to be prepared for the weather (though the house stays wonderfully cool easily thus far, and we've had some days in the upper 80s and lower 90s already.)

I have my paint ready to finish the master bathroom this week and then its all about making everything as inviting and pretty as possible.
