Greer Discusses Interests Over Values In Politics

(Before It's News)

Another great thought-provoking essay on The Archdruid Report:
thearchdruidreport.blogspot.com/2016/09/the-coming-of-postliberal-era.html

He discussed how the particular brand of “Liberalism” that has dominated the left for the last century or so has been led by elites pretending to cater to the working class, the poor, people of color, etc.- and yet most often falling short on those promises, and instead using their captive constituency to further their own selfish interests. While we were growing and enjoying all the extras from fossil fuel use and being citizens of the American Empire era, progress and improvement came at a steady enough clip that elite liberals could get away with this strategy. They suggest values but don't address actual interests in any real way.

What's happening in the last few years, and especially in this last election cycle, is that instead of slow but steady improvements in people's standard of living, we've had several years of obvious sliding downward mobility. (Though living standards have gone down over the last 40 years, many things helped to hide it, and it happened slowly enough not to be obviously noticed until very recently.)

This has caused people on the left who are NOT elite to begin to realize their interests have to come before the value platitudes being foisted upon them from the top down, and its tearing the Democratic party apart. (Of course, something similar is happening to the Neo-Conservatives on the right– as the whole Trump phenomenon attests to, but Greer has yet to get to that.)

My own commentary:

Commenter Howard Skillington mentioned the idea of a new political party called “The Deplorables” as Clinton made a statement about half of Trump's supporters were such. I've actually heard the term used several times by Trump supporters who are aware of how they are perceived in the media with a sort of sardonic humor– they are embracing the name.

The term is catching on:

http://www.patheos.com/blogs/markshea/2016/09/on-deplorables-as-the-new-alt-right-badge-of-honor.html

You get the idea– plenty more of THAT to be found in the web-o-sphere, and more everyday.

When a group of people just shrug off the value judgment and agree with being called “deplorable”, its a pretty clear sign to my mind that the liberal 'high horse' is just not as impressive as it used to be…

JMG replied:

Lucretia, true enough. Liberal rhetoric has devolved to “Do what I tell you, or I'll call you a nasty name!” That somehow doesn't have a lot of clout.
