Yesterday was supposed to be full of chaos and mayhem, courtesy of Mother Nature. My sister said that in Portland they lost power and a tree fell down on a powerline and caught on fire. Another friend had a wooded fence fall down in the wind.
Here–? We had a half hour of slightly elevated wind– and that's it. The storm, remnants of Super Typhoon Songda, skirted back out to sea, headed towards the Alaskan coast, and only the Oregon and southern Washington coast got hammered a little.
I was all excited, got the candles out, gasoline for the generator, outdoor furniture secured, the whole preparation bit…. and there was NO point to any of it (other than maybe we're set for the next real storm.)
Weather is just so damned TAME here in the PNW. We rarely get any disruptive weather. Fires from drought and lightning? Nah. Floods– despite all the rain we get, its mostly soft drizzles over many months not downpours. Winds? We have mountains and trees that keep it down in general, and hurricanes/typhoons and tornadoes are nearly unheard of here. Snow? Ice? MAYBE once or twice a year for a day or two. The mountains and deserts get more interesting action, but the valleys were most people live are just very mild and boring.
So– a real storm was rather exciting, but this last one that got the weather people all in a tizzy was just disappointing as hell.
