Aside from my own goals and plans for the next year (shared in a 'friends only' entry) the broader picture regarding the future is hardly optimistic…
I'm looking at the future with a serious case of The Dreads!
Top of the list is Trump and the all-Republican Congress. I'm not sure what's going to happen there, but– if history is any guide– we're all going to have a lot more to complain about soon! I may be pleasantly surprised in some areas, but overall, I'm bracing for impact. From social progress being rolled back, to retarded Trump twitter mistakes, to Oligarchs taking over our nation openly, to the fragile economy crashing into depression, to….
… see? The list just goes on and on and on!
The extremist right-wing near-Fascism isn't limited to the U.S. either, but is showing up more and more in Europe. Though I can sympathize with those who feel desperate enough to turn to pedagogues in times of crisis, its a clear case of the 'cure' being worse than the disease!
Meanwhile, of course, the actual problems of over-population and over-exploitation of resources is never openly addressed, because to do so would be to confront the only solution, which requires the sacrifice of luxuries for the developed nations' citizens and the stalling of the rise of the worlds underclass populations.
There is no way this is ending pretty. I've known what was coming down the pike for some time and strove to be ready for it in some fashion, and now must follow the same path again. Still, quite aside from my own personal safety and comfort, I can't help but cringe in anticipation of watching each new horrific nightmare unfold. I try to think of it as if I'm in an adventure novel or something, just to give myself some needed perspective.
As with all things, this, too, shall pass. One day humans will be humbled and Nature will prevail and heal, as She always does, and a smaller population of people will find a new way to make their way in the world. I know that, but it grants me little comfort as I bear witness to a global calamity now well underway.
