Second Amendment Rights
Earlier in the year (February 2012 or so) I wrote about the GOP primaries, the likely candidates and the net effect on gun control legislation, second amendment rights, and our liberties; it was met with some resistance and cynicism by my readership.

I made some predictions; now it’s time to see if I was right.
Prediction #1 on GOP and Second Amendment rights:
I said no matter how much the GOP candidates grill each other or avoid working together in the primaries, the only candidate who can win is Mitt Romney, and he is the likely candidate.
I was right.
Romney proved resilient enough and the other primary candidates stuck their feet in their mouths enough to propel Mitt Romney into the top spot.
A word on Ron Paul and second amendment rights
Ron Paul was the ideal choice from a Gun Control/Gun rights perspective. More of a libertarian than a true conservative in the general political sense, constitutionally, Ron Paul is as conservative as a politician can get. His track record on Gun Rights and gun legislation is above reproach as far as gun owners are concerned. If I thought he could win with his foreign policy ideas (he couldn’t possibly) and if I thought his reach was further than the several million hardcore followers that he has in tow, I would have voted for him. I would have touted him on the many blogs I write for; I would have done what I could to get the word out to my fellow Americans. In the end, a vote for Ron Paul was/is a vote for Obama. Does that take anything away from my respect for Ron Paul? No way. I love the guy, he is a true patriot, and I believe if there were even 25 more Ron Paul’s in public service this Country would be on a much better path. He has my support but not my vote; if something changes I’ll let you know.
It has truly become a battle of the lesser of two evils in the hearts and minds of Americans.
Prediction #2 on the GOP and second amendment rights:
I said that Rick Santorum should gear up for 8.5 years from now, because by then, he’d probably be a much more electable candidate.
The jury is still out on that, he seemed to be a non-starter in the RNC, and we will just have to see how things shake out. If Romney Wins, it’s likely that Paul Ryan will run 8 years later-and win. That’s 16 years of Paul Ryan with a lot of Power, seemingly a good thing, definitely better for second amendment rights than most of the other choices we have. Rick Santorum would be a good candidate IF two things happen:
- Romney/Ryan do very well and reestablish some conservative values into the mainstream
AND
- Ryan decides not to run for president after that
Both are up in the air, but I think the first is a foregone conclusion, given the current state of the Union, and the second is probably not likely. In all reality, Santorum’s only hope is as a cabinet member or a redo at an elected senate/congress position.
Prediction #3 for the GOP and second amendment rights:
I said that while I’m not completely confident that Romney can beat Obama in a general election, Conservatives (which make up a little more than half) and independents are likely to choose Romney over Obama.
I think I got that right. Just recently Ultra-leftist commentators have admitted: “It’s Obama’s election to lose, Not Romney’s to win, and it seems that Obama is losing it thus far with his polling numbers dropping…” that came from two commentators on Fox (Bob Beckel-a relative moderate liberal) and on MSNBC (by one of their ultra-left commentators)
There has been a large exodus from the left to the right, and I think, despite the initial pop from the DNC Clinton and Kerry speeches, that the polling pop will die back down, and that it still comes down to the moderates-which Romney seems to be gaining ground with daily.
Prediction #4 on the GOP and second amendment rights:
I said this election is the most important in history. With the UN ATT and the second four years of an 8-year term for an ultra-left leaning president, this could effectively change the second amendment rights we enjoy, more than any other time in history.
I think I nailed that one. Shortly after my initial article, the NRA, among other gun rights advocates came out affirming my position on the topic. The GOP announced the most Pro-Gun platform in its history, and Romney made a speech at the National NRA convention which seemed incredibly well-received. With the addition of Paul Ryan to the ticket, I’m relatively sure, we won’t be moving backwards on gun rights in the next four years.
If Romney/Ryan isn’t victorious, we could be in for a Chicago style takeover of gun rights across the USA. Alex Jones, and other conspiracy theorist and Ultra-righties haven’t been too far off with their “reporting” when they explain the drills and dry runs for gun confiscation; the Post Katrina gun grabbing is obvious and well documented. The UN meeting in Chicago was a prelude to the kiss of death for gun rights: this Administration is simply waiting to get more radical until they shore up their reelection.
Second amendment rights are in danger with a reelection of the incumbent president.
I talked in my first article about the profound importance of the second amendment rights to the founding fathers. That hasn’t changed, obviously. We have seen enough erosion to our liberties as a result of the Patriot Act and subsequent NSA and other intelligence gathering legislation, that we don’t need more erosion to our second amendment rights.
There are hundreds of quotes from our founding fathers to prove their love of the second amendment rights. I don’t need to play that one out I don’t think.
Second Amendment rights in the right political climate
Just as the United States didn’t have a chance of electing a Conservative Republican (like John McCain claimed to be-I respect John McCain by the way), there is little likelihood that the voting public (mostly conservatives) will be able to tolerate another four years of ultra-leftist agenda. It’s about time for the Conservatives to make a stand. The tea party, though they do not enjoy much of a reputation in the liberal mainstream media, have not faded away like the Occupy Movement’s backers had claimed they would.
There is over 55% conservative leaning voting power in the United States, so it really comes down to mobilizing the voting base, assuring that there is enough substance behind Romney/Ryan that those who hadn’t planned to vote, WILL. The addition of Paul Ryan did more for Romney than any other single pick could have. Sure Rubio enjoys a good reputation with the Tea Party and some Latinos, but the Tea Party will vote for Romney over Obama ANYWAY. Sure, having a swing state’s backing makes a lot of sense, but it’s not a shoo-in by picking Ohio’s potential running mate, or Virginia’s anyway. Picking Condoleezza Rice didn’t make sense, though I respect her highly. New Jersey’s Chris Christie has the balls to do something, but would have been criticized by the left for numerous reasons, ans perhaps is too bold to compliment Romney well. I can foresee a cabinet position of great proportions for a guy like him; perhaps even replacing a guy LIKE Panetta, given the right circumstances (though it won’t be in the first term-Patreaus would be the likely replacement).
Needless to say, from a second amendment rights perspective, Paul Ryan was the obvious choice given that Rand Paul didn’t have the spotlight, and Ron Paul was a primary candidate and no other serious VP picks. I’m sure if he pushed hard enough, Romney could have lined up Colin Powell, but there is enough leftism in Powell after 2008’s election to be detrimental in the media.
Let’s talk about Romney’s gun voting record: in Massachusetts he was abysmal by staunchly conservative viewpoints, but an in depth analysis shows he actually probably prevented worse legislation from ever being able to take a foothold there. Lesser of two evils, remember?
A second term for a borderline socialist (I actually don’t think he is as bad as he is made out to be… YET), would be devastating for second amendment rights. Rahm Emanuel practically controls Barack Obama, and in a second term, Rahm would dictate the harshest of gun control legislation. Without perfect sweeps in the congressional and senate races for staunch conservatives, we would be powerless to stop the gun grabbing efforts of the far left.
The UN ATT has already been given the go ahead by Hillary Clinton, and with Bill Clinton agreeing to back Obama this election cycle, it’s clear she’ll be given a chance to run in 4 years from now. 4 years of Hilary Clinton could be the worst thing this country has ever seen for second amendment rights. No joke, it would be DANGEROUS.
What can we expect for second amendment rights then?
With Ryan as his VP running mate, there is no way that recreational gun rights are touched.
With the GOP announcing rollbacks on federal law for magazine capacity bans (they are even touting an unlimited capacity rule federally, perhaps also forcing the states to enact more lenient mag ban restrictions-A big thank you from CA), it’s likely that we just got the biggest boost for second amendment rights since the Reagan Era and the wind up of the Cold War.
Romney isn’t going to allow gun grabs on a National level, it’s too risky. He knows nothing can be done until about 2.5 years into his term, and he wants the second four years to do what HE WANTS, so that’s a relatively safe haven for gun owners.
The only truly dangerous opportunity for wide scale gun grabbing, is a Hilary Clinton Secretary of State second term (UN ATT) and a major catastrophe, like 9/11 or Katrina.
In the end, second amendment rights are protected for eight years if Romney is elected.
Here is why:
- Romney wouldn’t dare ruin his chance for a second term by touching the second amendment rights of his constituents
- Ryan is ultra conservative with regards to second amendment rights
- IF Romney performs poorly, or isn’t elected for a second term in office, a new liberal President would have hard time implementing gun legislation in a first term without facing massive public unrest
- Congress and the Senate seem to be strong in their Republican (and now, thanks to the tea party) truly conservative, candidate pool.
- Ryan would run for president in 8 years if the Administration does well; at this point, he’s our strongest pro-gun politician and he occupies a position of real power if Romney/Ryan is elected.
Each of us as gun owners, patriots and conservatives (don’t worry, I still love my liberal friends), as well as those who lean towards center or even left, but still understand the second amendment rights we are afforded by the constitution, knows what the second amendment rights are all about.
I don’t need to lecture anyone on that topic.
The greatest threat to second amendment rights in history
But we do face a time of unparalleled danger to our liberties; especially our second amendment rights: it’s time to do something about it. Let’s not sulk about our chosen primary candidate not getting picked. Let’s not debate whether we should write in Ron Paul because he deserves to be the pro-gun candidate for the right. Let’s coalesce (in the most gratifying sense of the word) behind a team of politicians who can win, and let’s got get our second amendment rights back!
