National Instant Criminal Check System

NEWTOWN, Conn --(Ammoland.com)- If you want to stay on top of news from the FBI’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS), you’d be wise to visit the NICS website.

There, you can sign up to receive NICS Messages –recent news, updates, outages, etc.-- by email. One item of news to come from NICS is the announcement of its upcoming hours.

Its current daily schedule of operation, 8 a.m.-1 a.m. Eastern, will remain in effect throughout the busy fall season.

The only deviation to the schedule will be Friday, Nov. 23, known as “Black Friday,” when the system will be operational from 6 a.m. to 1 a.m. Call centers, state Points of Contact (POCs) and the NICS Section will observe the extended hours that day.

The NICS Section will cease operation at midnight on Christmas Eve and remain closed Christmas Day. It will resume normal operations on Dec. 26 at 8 a.m.
