Not All Public Health Threats are Obvious
Public health threats can range from well-known issues to unusual and little known considerations. Few dispute the challenges faced by a society that tends to be confronted with obesity and related issues. Diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease are easily identified as having ties to weight related concerns. Few would be surprised at the effects of natural disasters on public health concerns. However, there are also lesser known diseases and concerns that create serious problems for the public.
Chagas disease can affect as many as 11 million people per year in the Americas, with approximately 50,000 dying each year from the disease. The disease is caused by a parasite that generally feeds on the face. In all, 21 countries are faced with the potential for infection by this disease.
While major incidents such as the Japanese tsunami bring radiation leakage to the attention of the world community, the reality is that 75 percent of U.S. nuclear power plants have been found to leak radioactive hydrogen. Preventive measures are important, including higher drinking water standards and better nuclear safety practices.
