(Before It's News)

Here is a good list of survival foods ,although some don’t actually last forever they will keep for a good long time.I like the rice idea ,it’s nice and cheep and lasts for 25+ years.Who would of thought twinkies could last 30 years.Beans are another great one,the high protein makes it ideal ,along with a shelf life of over 30 years.Did you know salt and sugar will out last you.

Some people think the world is going to end on Friday.

According to believers, this apocalypse could manifest itself in a number of ways. If there is a disaster and you happen to make it out alive, there’s a good chance supermarkets will soon be pillaged and you’ll need access to a steady stream of food.

That means you’ll need to pack your cupboard with shelf-stable ingredients that provide enough energy to help you rebuild society.

Here’s what to grab before the end of the world hits, or during all that looting that’s sure to follow.

Honey

Shelf-life: Indefinite

Honey may crystallize over time, resulting in a heap of thick, sugary gunk at the bottom of containers, but in terms of safety, the golden liquid is practically immortal.

Honey can last for centuries if stored in a sealed jar, according to the National Honey Board.

Though it doesn’t pack the same nutritional value (in terms of vitamins and minerals) as other foods, honey can add extra flavor to food, provide simple sugars, and can also be used to treat wounds and burns

Shelf-life: Indefinite

Invented by Native Americans, pemmican was traditionally made from the lean meat of large game like buffalo, elk, or deer. The meat was dried over an open fire, mixed with fat, and pressed into little cakes. Sometimes berries were tossed in for extra flavor.

Pemmican makes the perfect survival treat because they’re easy to make (there are only three basic ingredients), it’s a good source of energy and protein, and it does not have to be refrigerated, cooked or heated.

Today, US Wellness Meats in Missouri makes packaged beef pemmican snack sticks and bars, which they say last up to two years in the freezer.

Here’s a recipe for homemade pemmican — for when your post-apocalyptic-self butchers an elk — which can supposedly last forever.

Meals, Ready to Eat

Wikipedia

Shelf-life: 5+ years

Commonly known as MREs, these pre-packaged meals have been sustaining American troops on the battlefield since 1981. Each foil pouch, which can be easily carried, prepared, and eaten, contains about 1,200 calories.

It’s not just standard meat and potato dishes either. There are a wide range of entrees to choose from, including beef brisket, lemon pepper tuna, and vegetable lasagna for plant-eating preppers.

Depending on storing conditions, an MRE bag can stay fresh for up to five years. If you’re less concerned about flavor, the pocket-size army grub can hold up for more than a decade.

  • I think I’ll go with McDonald’s burgers, which never decompose, yep, you can leave them out for months and no sign of decomposition. They must be holy, like the bodies if the saints that don’t decompose. LOL We dried a lot of veggies and keep them in slidelock bags. Rice is good; we like parboiled and have lots put away. Canned fruit lasts a very long time. O’Reilly was the one who thought Murphy to be an optimist. One of O’Reilly’s laws states that the degree to which you prepare for disaster, is directly proportional to the probability that you will be taken out by an incoming meteor. Anything we do to an extreme, tends to be balanced by an equal and opposing force. Winning the lottery, is a sure way to bring equal misfortune into your life. Life is a balancing act, not a race or any kind of competition. We must maximize learning, while minimizing destruction, you know, fair and balanced, like FOX News, not really but I think you get the point.

    • Beautifully said.

    • McDonald’s burgers indeed decompose if you put them in a zip-lock bag, or a containing that is non-breathable. The myth about the chemicals and preservatives keeping them from spoiling is false, it’s the moisture which determines if they decompose.
Just be sure to leave them out so that they dry first. Then you’re good to go.

  • The concern about tins is that they are lined with BPA, which is a gender-bending xenoestrogen. So if you “make it out alive”, and meet some ex-Miss America who decides that if you’re the only one left, you’ll have to do, then you are still stuffed in terms of repopulating the earth with little cuties.

  • MRE’s STUPID, the Reason they can last 5 YEARS is because they are full of chemicals. Soldiers complain they go right through their bowels, like nothing. Soldiers are and have always been the guinea pigs for trying out new things, (bogus inoculations like Anthrax)

during world war two, soldiers were put on the ships to face the atomic blast in the Pacific, and then braised for the splash and shock wave of the blast. my high school instructor was one of those and had 3 kinds of cancer as result,

The soldiers you see in the Nevada desert in the trenches miles away for the atomic blast above ground, including the Hollywood movie crew that filled that famous blast showing the heat and shock wave, ALL died within 2 years from cancer.

Those MRE’s last 5 years because they are full of Steroids, to give the soldiers false energy, and hallucinations & PTSD hallucinations, plus preservatives, plus GMO’s to test them on soldiers, and plus spermicides known as epicyte, Monsanto bought the patent rights to epicyte and added it to their GMO plus Roundup Ready pesticide that causes breast cancer in men and women. No wonder military men & women have highest rate of infertility, even when not deployed. Epicyte is a patented spermicide Monsanto incorporated into their Corn and all corn meal, corn bread products.

Avoid MRE’s at all cost, one soldier told me, MRE’s destroyed his intestines.

    • Fantastic post Stanley, and I do mean it. I knew some but not all of what you just posted.

  • it doesnt get much more stupid than this…

  • You failed to mention 1 important thing. None of these items are radiation proof on their own, not even MRE’s.

  • I’m just wondering how something with a shelf life of 3-5 years is even remotely classified as lasting forever.
    Except maybe Twinkies

    Not true

  • In a life or death situation this chick is worried about BPA. SURVIVAL FOOD! Get it?
