Jason sent us the following question, can you help him? “What are the pros and cons of using coal as a heat source in a necessary situation?”
Some comments we received:

Comment #1:  None if it is an emergency. It has been shown to release small amounts of fumes that are toxic over time, but its better than freezing to death for sure.

Comment #2:  Make sure it is well-ventilated, but has been used as a major heating fuel for centuries. much the same hazards as using charcoal indoors. Raises CO to dangerous levels if you don’t vent it. Anything burned removes oxygen from small spaces surprisingly fast.

Comment #3:  Only con is ash production and disposal about 5 times the ash of wood, I use about 45 60 lbs per day to heat 3500 sq ft to 75 degrees f. I keep about 2 months worth on hand, it never goes bad. Needs a stove designed for coal use a regular wood stove won’t work unless it has a shaker grate for ash removal.

Comment #4:  One problem not before mentioned; coal is extremely dirty. Don’t use it unless you don’t mind everything you own covered in a thin layer of coal dust.
