There are many practical reasons for installing a wall safe, almost none of them involve hiding your super secret spy stash from the feds. Let’s face it if the jack boots come knocking and gain entrance to your homestead a $90 wall safe placed behind a tacky painting will not be overlooked by their fine tooth comb. Keeping that in mind here are a few other reasons which might motivate you to install a wall safe.
Redundancy. It’s always nice to have a backup plan so why not have 2 safes in different locations in your home? If in the unlikely event evil doers were to gain access to your home and pilfer your main safe, it would be nice to have a backup safe which contained copies of all of your vital documents (SS cards, Birth Certs, Marriage License et al).
Access to Firearms. Many people have children in the home and for that reason do not leave an unattended (and loaded) firearms next to their bed but rather lock everything up in a main safe. If something were to go bump in the night it becomes rather inconvenient to have to go to another room (or level) in the home in order to access a gun safe. With a wall safe installed in a bedroom closet it is much easier to quickly access a firearm at night, while otherwise keeping loaded weapons out of the reach of little hands.
Discreetness. While it did mention that a thorough home search would easily disclose the location of your wall safe, it still is nice to have something that is mostly hidden from view. When placed in a closet behind a bunch of clothes or in a room (with picture hung in front of it) the safe is practically hides in plain sight.
It’s Easy to do! I installed my safe (see below) in 15 minutes, the hardest part was making sure that it was level once installed. Actually now that I think about it the hardest part was convincing my wife that this was a “great idea”, she came into the room with a look of astonishment after she heard me sawing through the drywall. I guess I should have mentioned my plans to her prior to executing the task. Oh well, too late now!
Installing a Paragon Wall Safe
There were a few features I wanted in my wall safe. I wanted an electronic keypad but additionally the safe had to have a key access option (backup). I also wanted something that had a few shelves in order to facilitate the segregation of items within the safe. The Paragon Lock and Safe Electronic Wall Safe was my choice, it runs around $100 (add $25 or so with shipping). Installing the safe was pretty straightforward and took about 15 minutes.
1. Identify the spot. The safe fits nicely between the existing wall studs in your home, make sure that there are no electric lines or water lines within the area that you want to open. It would be terrible to hack a nice hole into your wall only to see water pipes.
2. Use a stud finder. Run this device across your drywall to locate the wall studs. Measure the distance between the studs, if it is smaller than 14.5 inches you’ll need to find another location. Most wall studs are 16 on center, hopefully yours are too.
3. Start hacking away. I used a drywall saw which was around $8 at Lowes, the cuts went easy to make. I made sure to take my time on the bottom cut, trying to keep it as level as possible (I was unsuccessful).
4. Test fit your safe. With a hole in the wall, drop in the safe for a test fit. Place your level across the top to make sure that it is indeed level. Mine was not so I had to remove a tiny bit from the bottom left of the drywall base in order to get it to sit perfectly level.
5. Drill it in. With the safe sitting in the wall, use the supplied wood screws to attach it to both left and right studs. My safe came with 6 screws (3 on either side).
6. Admire your work. Take a step back and nod your head in approval. Don’t forget to set the 4 to 6 digit code on the keypad. That’s all there is to it! You can leave the safe as is or hang a picture over the top of it.
