My thoughts and prayers go out to the families and loved ones of the victims of the shooting in Newton, CT.
As an administrator, I have a few quick thoughts, my perspective on this tragic shooting.
1. There are many “experts” on the TV who have no clue what they are talking about in regards to how security and safety work in our elementary schools. Tighten up too much and parents whine and complain that it takes too long to get to their students lunch or holiday party. Make it too lax, and people who have no business in a school setting or around students have easy access. There will never be a happy medium. We should always error on the side of safety.
2. Teachers are not trained anti-terrorist agents. When someone gets up and says that “teachers should be trained, they are the first defense,” that is true, but watching a video or doing one drill a semester is never enough. And that is usually what they give us! Anti-terrorist agents train over and over again.
3. Let us carry concealed! Educators who go through a Concealed Handgun License course should be allowed to carry on campus. Each teacher is trusted with 20 plus students a day, I think we are responsible enough and can be trusted to carry a firearm.
4. The world is changing. Unfortunately, this will happen again.
5. This is not the school’s fault. Anyone who would blame the school is just an idiot!
6. This is not a gun issue! Anyone wanting to hurt someone else will always find a way!
7. This could have easily occurred anywhere!
