(Before It's News)

This lantern won an Eco-Design award at the 2009
Consumer Electronics Show and provides clean, dependable light. The manufacturer is Freeplay Energy and this was produced in China back in 2008. Although I do not put much faith in products from China, I have been very pleased with the this little lanterin. The MSRP for this lantern is $55 USD but I am sure you can find it at a lower price online. It weighs in at 10.2 oz and is only 6.5 in tall making it an ideal camping lantern.

It comes with removable and rechargeable 3.6V Ni-MH batteries which supplies the power for 4 Ultra bright LED lights. It also comes with a single 5mm LED work light. The 4 LED array at maximum setting should last you about 8 hours on a full charge while the single LED light should last you approximately 40 hours.

Overall impression: I like the availability of having both a wide area and a focus beam of light. I can take it on long backpacking trips with no need of batteries. As with all our gear it needs to serve dual purposes and this lantern makes a great item to keep in the house for those times when the electricity goes out. It does take a fair amount of energy to crank and this may put off some folks. But we figure it a great way to get those arms in shape!
