Don’t rule out that possibility. Meat may be hard to come by one day. But plenty of wild hogs are a food source, and they roam the countryside. You might want to include them in your prepping endeavors to keep your family fed.
The first two videos below demonstrate how ham is cured and smoked. Take a few minutes to watch. And try not to drool on your computer.
The third video is just for fun. It features Ricky Skaggs singing, “You Can’t Hurt Ham.” It makes a telling point about why you should think of ham for survival.

Good article. I’d bet you that 90% of our population couldn’t tell you how to can, much less cure meat. If things really get bad someday, somebody will make a fortune selling books on how to can foods properly. However, there’s a lot of little tricks of the trade that I doubt any book would show you. That’s why there’s nothing like learning it from the old timers.
It’s not a bad idea to learn how to preserve meat, but if you are going to eat hog, make sure they haven’t had access to corpses and effluent, they literally eat everything. Which is why they are considered a ‘dirty’ animal not fit for consumption in certain parts of the world. They will dead bodies and shit.
i will agree with pix for once. at deer hunting season last fall, the small town wisconsin news report warned to shoot any wild hogs they see cause they are so mean and dangerous. also, not to eat them cause they do eat anything they can find. even you.
