What Do You Bring To The Table?

By Johnsobo 100 – Editor at Large

As a Seasoned Citizen Prepper, that sounds so much better than Senior Citizen, I have often thought; what would I bring to the table in a WROL, TEOTWAWKI, Grid-Down scenario, or Economic Collapse, call it what you will?  Let me re-phrase the question:  What would I bring?

I don’t know the age profile of most of the readers on SCP, but I suspect many are like me. They have been around for awhile.  Senior moments come a little more often than they used to. I can’t use that chain-saw nearly as long, and sometimes I have more problems opening a jar lid than I used to. Aches and pains are more frequent. Often, a nap really sounds great. Does anyone relate?

Oh, don’t get me wrong, I am not feeling sorry for myself, and I do think most of us have a lot to contribute. That is becoming quite evident when I read articles from all the Editors at Large and of course Bev and Rourke.  Not to mention all the excellent comments of everyone who reads SCP.

What I am trying to convey goes much deeper.  Let me try to explain by giving you

an example from Scripture.  The book of Numbers tells the story of how Israel

prepared to enter the Promised Land. In fact, God gave Moses very specific

instructions on how He wanted everything done. Each of the twelve tribes had

specific duties for this journey. However, only the Levites had the responsibility

 for the Tabernacle.

The verses that really jumped off the pages were Numbers 8:23-26:*

23  And the Lord said to Moses, 24 “This applies to the Levites: Men

twenty-five years old or more shall come to take part in the work at the Tent of

Meeting, 25 but at the age of fifty, they must retire from their regular service and

work no longer. 26 They may assist their brothers in performing their duties at the

Tent of Meeting, but they themselves must not do the work. This, then, is how you

are to assign the responsibilities of the Levites.”  * NIV

I must have missed that part when I read the book of Numbers before. I

know that God had His reasons, after all, they did move the tabernacle often,  and

I am sure the work was very strenuous and the younger men could handle the

work much  easier. No, I am not questioning God’s reasoning, but I began to

wonder what “assist their brothers” looked like, and how would that apply to me

 today.

Looking back on age 50, I still thought I was in pretty good shape, and could hang

In there with the best of them. Well, maybe some of them. The S on my shirt may

have been somewhat faded, and no, I couldn’t leap tall buildings in a single

 bound, but assist!

After much prayer, and God continuing  to work on  me over the last few decades,

I finally realized that I needed to re-define my definition of the word assist. I now

realize that I may not be the one to take the heavy load any more. So, what load

should I now take? A chronicle of my life would not be nearly as informative and

compelling as Harold, and I understand that some of the other Editor’s at Large

are writing their chronicles as I write this article, and to be truthful, I cannot wait

to read them.

Oh, I can still give some of my experiences, and a tip now and then, but what

could I bring to the table for the long-haul. Something that might make a

difference in a young person’s life.

Along with all the life experiences and how to articles, I feel that we must try to

explain to our younger generation, just how we got into this mess we are in as a

Nation and as a people. I realize that there have been many books written on how

we  have arrived at this point in time, but most of them have been from an

economic perspective, with a few from a Spiritual point of view. The latter is

where I feel I must go.
