Growing up, I was the older of two boys that were raised by parents that knew how to get by because they had to know how to make due. Neither of my parents had very much growing up and although both worked very hard to make sure we had everything we needed, we certainly saw our share of struggles to make ends meet as a family. It was this circumstance that taught us at a very early age to appreciate everything we had and never take anything for granted. We learned how to be self-sufficient at an early age and grew up not being afraid of a little hard work. We saw the impact that helping another in their time of need can have and learned the invaluable lesson of compassion for your fellow human being. Watching my parents work so hard and still struggle to get by instilled in me a strong drive to improve my position in life, so I embraced hard work, sacrificed and earned my education that resulted in a college degree and a wonderful career.

I am so thankful for the way I was raised and the lessons my parents taught me along the way. My Dad took care of making sure I understood the rougher lessons of the world like how important it is to keep your word, explained situational awareness through example and drove home the lesson of the imperative of a balance between kindness and toughness. My Mom was the one drilling me on forward thinking, teaching me to have respect for myself as well as for others and the value of practicing readiness in my daily life for whatever the world may have in store for not only me, but those around me as well.

I graduated from the Grady School of Journalism at the University of Georgia in 1998 have been a working journalist at a worldwide television network since. Time and again I have witnessed citizens of our country, as well as those around the world, suffer disaster after disaster…both natural and man-made. More often than not, those impacted by the emergency were caught unprepared and left scrambling without the supplies or even the plans necessary to navigate even the shortest disruptions in their daily lives. I’ve watched families flee their homes running from wildfires as they lost all they owned because they did not have an emergency kit pre-packed with copies of important documents or treasured family photos. I’ve seen people die in their vehicles after being trapped in severe weather simply because they had not planned ahead or stayed informed about the current weather. And I have seen mothers leading their very young children through a destroyed community in triple digit heat in search of food and clean water, localized refugees reduced to begging for help after a prolonged power outage, simply because they did not have even a few days worth of rations in their homes. It is absolutely heartbreaking.

The lessons taught to me by my parents coupled with the multitude of examples I have seen during my nearly 15 year career as a journalist have brought me to where I am today and have been the driving force behind the creation of Practical Tactical. I have come to know that with just the most basic level of preparedness you can prevent you and your loved ones from ending up in the types of dire situations I have just mentioned above after disaster strikes. With only a minimal effort, you can insure that your family will not be forced out into the chaos that inevitably occurs during and after an emergency.

We believe in taking practical steps that will give you and your family a tactical advantage should you ever find yourself in a disaster situation or a time of crisis. Each family is different and therefore, needs its own plan. We want to help you develop, establish and implement a personalized and practical disaster preparedness plan that you and your family can control and be comfortable with. By developing a personalized plan and taking action now, you can be ready before you know it and develop habits that we believe will prove to be an extremely fulfilling, lifelong pursuit that will allow you and your loved ones to avoid stress and worry and enjoy life.

I do not only encourage others to adopt this lifestyle, but I practice what I preach. I began my more organized journey towards preparedness a couple of years ago, educating myself in the basic tenets of preparedness and my family has adopted a readiness lifestyle that we have found to be extremely fulfilling and rewarding. The “road to ready” will never end and no one will ever know everything about preparedness or survival because every person’s situation is different, but each of us can take a look at our lives, determine our preparedness goals and develop a plan to reach them. From there, you will begin your journey towards preparedness and I believe you will find that you are happier, more knowledgeable and will develop a greater peace of mind along the way. At Practical Tactical, it is our promise to be there to help you along every step of the way.
