FEEDBACK:

From Listeners:

I am wondering about the benefits of supplements for adults and children.  I have heard that if you eat a balanced diet you don’t need to take vitamins and the benefits are purely placebo.

I also had a question about childhood obesity.  At what point is weight gain for a 10 year old a concern and if so, what should we do next?

Jennifer Gray

Jennifer: Thank you so much for the question.  As we always recommend, we would refer you to your doctor about any deficiencies you may suspect that you have.  We are all trying to follow the most nutrient-rich diets that we can, but we are unable to advise you on your need for vitamins.  I’m not sure if we can get ALL the vitamins and nutrients we need from food but with everyone being so different, getting your own medical work up that would show your own levels would be the best place to start.

The same is true for your childhood obesity question.  As a mom of a 10 year old, I can empathize with your concerns.  I applaud your desire to support your family with healthy habits at a young age.  So again, start with your pediatrician.  That professional should be able to advise you on your unique situation.

In addition to that, it is always a great idea for you and your kids to get as knowledgeable as possible about eating healthy and healthy lifestyle habits.  We have this free program in Houston:  http://www.mendfoundation.org

You may have something like MEND in your area.  They focus on adolescents and helping them make healthier choices.  The trainings are for the whole family.  Good luck to you guys and thank you so much for the feedback.      - Carol.
