Lucas Behaeghe, a high schooler just learning about survival, asks: “What is a good survival knife to begin with?”
Commenter 1: “I’m going a little offroad here. Value for money, I’d suggest you look into Mora knives. They are made in Sweden, and have been gaining an excellent reputation in the outdoor community. They are 3/4 tang which is a non-starter for some, but I’ve found they are very durable, capable and versatile knives. They are also a bit shorter than your standard fixed blade, so they tend to be “legal” in more areas (I believe, but check your local laws), but the blade length actually is a strength, as it’s easier to control. I’d say for the $10 or so you’d spend on a Mora that it wouldn’t be an unwise investment.”
Commenter 2: “Ka-Bar. All I use. Carry that and a fire-striker. Wrap some fishing line like Spiderwire around the handle, glue a couple hooks TO the handle under the line. This is what I did, my Ka-Bar has saved my bacon several times.”
Commenter 3: “I hear good things about the Schrade ultimate survival, not too pricey either.”
Commenter 4: “For the younger group I always suggest a lock blade knife the their hand can fully grip with a nonslip surface. They don’t need a huge knife until they become proficient in the use and UPKEEP in the one they have.”
