The news about the H7N9 Avian Influenza strain in China has taken an ominous turn this week. First, it has now spread to Beijing by infecting a young girl (who’s parents happen to be chicken dealers). Second, this bird flu is Tamiflu resistant which has researchers scrambling to develop a vaccine and leaves victims of the virus defenseless. In an announcement yesterday, the UN has “concerns” that this virus will spread past China’s borders. My hunch is that it already has and the UN is simply covering it’s own butt. So far, it has roughly a 25% mortality rate.
We found a medical blog that had this to say about the H7N9 strain:
“Infection of poultry with influenza A subtype H7 viruses is widespread, but this subtype has not been observed in humans in Asia before now. Previously, most human infections with highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) A (H7) viruses have resulted in mild illness. Transmission of H7 viruses to mammals is rare in Asia, and human infection with N9 subtype viruses has never been documented anywhere……..Genetic sequence data indicate that the H7N9 virus may bind more easily to human receptors than avian receptors and that the virus may also be transmitted by air.”
Keep watching the news on this one….
