In our country, anything is possible. We, Americans, don`t need to follow any of the common sense rules the rest of the world has been following for thousands of years. We`re special. If we could find a way to defy gravity, I`m sure we`d do it, just to show how special we are. After all, we`ve been a “superpower” for what seems to be an eternity and no one could ever force us to justify our actions. We do whatever we please without bothering to think about consequences, because they`re simply too insignificant compared to the greatness of our country.
Now, if all this effort of being “special” was targeted towards doing good deeds, helping the economy and the environment, creating jobs for the unemployed, dragging Americans out of poverty and so on… I`d be the first one to support this. But when I see the outrageous things going on in America for years now, I tremble with disgust. I`m talking about crimes that would have sent thousands of people straight to the electric chair in the old days. However, now they`re merely “frowned upon”, if not seen as part of day-to-day business. And the best example to illustrate how ignorant authorities are of such atrocities is this:
source: news.yahoo.com
According to YahooNews, a Defense Department-wide report Tuesday shows that instances of the crime in the US military had jumped from 19,000 in 2010 to 26,000 in 2012. This means that sexual attacks increased by one-third in just two years! And the most sickening part here is that everyone, from the Pentagon to the White House, were “shocked” when these results came to light. How is it possible that no one noticed 26 000 women (mostly) were sexually assaulted in such a short period of time?
As Greg Jacob, policy director of the Service Women’s Action Network, very well puts it: “Clearly the business-as-usual manner in which the military handles sexual assault cases has led to a climate where the very officers in charge of preventing this criminal activity feel that sexual assault is acceptable behavior. The military has proven time and again that the current system of prosecuting these cases is broken.”
And if that wasn`t outrageous enough, here`s a sexual scandal that shows exactly how common these attacks are in the military: Lt. Col. Jeff Krusinski of the Air Force’s Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Office was arrested for allegedly groping a woman in a parking lot. The woman had to fight him off her, leaving him with scratch marks on his face. Thank God she was a fighter, otherwise he would`ve probably raped and hurt her, like he did to God knows how many other women…
This man is getting paid to protect women just like the one he assaulted. He goes to work in the morning as a Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Office and laughs his face off while he reads the stories of thousands of women getting raped and beaten by his fellow officers. Then he goes into a parking lot and starts groping a woman simply because she happened to be there. And because he was absolutely sure that he wouldn`t get caught or punished for his actions.
And he`s just one of the thousands out there who share this mentality. A mentality that is so deeply rooted in the system that it seems more like a right than a crime. The rules of the game have long been set: powerful men abuse women for their own fun and pleasure, while the victims have to keep their mouth shut if the want to keep their job.
To these monsters, sexual assault is nothing more than a joke they find hilarious. As RTAmerica reported a few month ago, the director of a US police union ridiculed a sexual assault case involving a Texas state trooper, joking that the women were simply receiving “customer service” by being subjected to a roadside cavity search.
This is how severe this situation is. This is the mentality Obama and his fellows promised to fight against and eradicate quickly. How will they do that? Nobody knows, but I`m quite certain this is the last time the Defense Department will publish statistics about sexual assault in the military. After all, no one knew about it so far and no one cared about it, either. So why scratch the unhealed wound when you can just cover the infection?
