I bought my house 8 years ago, and for all those years I knew I had a mulberry tree in my backyard. I paid it very little attention, except to hack away at the incredibly fast growing branches that kept getting everywhere in the early spring. It’s planted in the corner of my property at the intersection of the fences and was most commonly used by my dog. As the branches drooped down it provided a nice private area she could go in and use as her bathroom. That’s right, a dog enjoys her privacy. Who knew.
I recently actually opened my eyes and realized that there is a TON of berries on this thing. Not only ripe berries, but berries in every stage of development from little tiny buds to green to white to orange red to black. What this told me is that this thing is probably going to give me berries all summer.
I always wondered if the berries were any good. I’m pretty sure they weren’t poisonous and the other night as I was cutting the grass I decided to try one as I was going by with the lawnmower.
It…was…. DELICIOUS.
It was kind of sweet with almost a grape kind of flavour. I realized that this tree in my backyard grew a ton of FOOD and that food is pretty important especially in a grid down situation. So I wondered what I could do with mulberries, so I asked my buddy Bubba.
I did a little more research and I found out that mulberry is incredibly hardy, fast growing, can be easily grown elsewhere with clippings and grows lots and lots of berries with very little care. It’s almost a weed tree – it is a weed tree but those very qualities make this an excellent survival plant in my opinion.
If I get my own property, I’m taking cuttings of this tree. If TSHTF I’m gonna do my darnedest to take cuttings of this tree.
Think about it. A weed tree that’s hardy and will grow in sun or shade and needs very little care producing all sorts of fruit loaded with natural sugars and scurvy killing vitamin C. Every prepper should have one!
So, I’m setting out on my own food adventure. I’m going to be picking mulberries and dong my best at creating home canned preserves. Wish me luck, I’m going to need it.
