(Before It's News)

This is the third installment of a monthly series called “Call to Action”Call to Action (CTA) is a monthly reminder to review one part of your prep’s and strengthen it.

Water is taken for granted in many countries – but especially in the United States. Most all have crystal clear water at the turn of a knob or the twist of a bottle cap. Just imagine if the water stops flowing and the ability to grab a bottle of water ceases. Massive panic would set in and engulf populations quickly. Sanitation would quickly become dangerously poor and the ability to irrigate even a small garden non-existent.

Water is important. It is critical. It is not exciting like a new pistol or the latest tacti-cool knife – but nonetheless important.

So – for the month of July my Call to Action is to review your current water storage system and adjust as needed. I believe most underestimate their true water needs by a fair margin. The standard “1 gallon per person per day” is certainly a minimum.

Water can be stored numerous ways including large drums and tanks. One of the simplest and least expensive methods to store water is to reuse 2-liter soda bottles. Washing the bottles out and refilling them is a great way to put back extra water. I do this myself with the goal of using this water for sanitation purposes.

There are lots of containers available to store water in. 5 and 7 gallon water containers can be picked up at your local department store. One of the best expedient water containers for home is the WaterBOB. The WaterBOB is large bladder that fits in your tub and can be filled with up to 100 gallon of water. Obviously it would need to be filled prior to an event – or while water is still flowing during an event.

A well is an excellent method to secure a water supply – as long as you have a method to obtain water from it when the grid is down.

Regardless of the container – start stocking up now.

In addition to storing water prior to an event – the ability to filter contaminates out of water should also be part of your water storage system. An excellent and highly recommended filter is the Berkey, sold by Directive21.com. Other water filters of a portable nature are available such as the excellent LifeStraw, the ultra-portable Frontier Emergency Water Filter System, and the Katadyn Hiker.

To wrap this up,  here are a couple of video’s that discuss water storage:
