Again this is in reference to the post I did on the K.W.N Facebook page asking folks what topics they would like me to cover over the coming weeks. By far the most requested topics were snaring, trapping, foraging, hunting and fishing…
We like foraging for seasonal wild foods; it’s natural, (usually) organic food for free and it’s something the kids enjoy very much. Blackberry picking being a particular favourite of theirs.
If you are interested in learning more about foraging in your area, the first thing you should consider is going out with a local expert who can provide specific advice and identify plants that are native to your location. Second to that there is a very good foraging acronym called I.T.E.M - (I)dentify, (T)ime of year, (E)nvironment, (M)ethod of preparation. You should apply this acronym to everything you consider harvesting from the wild.
There are some key rules involved in learning and using the I.T.E.M acronym, but luckily for you, Greene Dean over at Eat The Weeds has done an excellent post walking you through it. I HIGHLY recommend you learn this.
