(Before It's News)

A friend introduced me to biochar some years back by forwarding an article on the “Terra preta” soils of the Amazon basin.

“Biochar” is basically a fancy word for “organic material that, like, got burned totally black in like, a fire and stuff.”

This is a good presentation on its varied benefits:

After 5:51, the video goes downhill into GloboWarmThink (Wasn’t the arctic ice supposed to be gone by now? OH SNAP!), but I am captivated by the idea of long-term soil improvement. I’ve written on my run-in with toxic manure a few years back. It was biochar that fixed the soil for me so I could garden in it again.

If you’ve got extra branches, weeds, etc. on your property and want to turn them into soil-building char, it’s not that hard.

Unlike the wonderfully scientific methods people have deduced for doing biochar, I like the way Ricky and Winky do it:

There are better ways, I know. But drinking beer and burning stuff is fun. So is improving crop yields.
