So Phil Robertson of Duck Dynasty fame said some stuff that wasn’t very politically correct. First of all who is really suprised by this? Seriously? I’m not saying Phil hates anybody, or that all older southern men are white sheet wearing members of the local Klavern. What I am saying is let’s look at the different groups Phil belongs to. He is an older white man. He grew up (as a white man) in the segregated South. He is conservative and deeply religious. He is a self professed redneck. People who fall into any of those groups probably have a few views that granola eating Emo Kids hipsters and PC Nazi’s probably aren’t going to like. Now take a guy who falls into all of those groups and well, you’ve got Phil Robertson.
Seriously who is surprised this guy has some arguably offensive views and says whatever he darn well feels like? From the little bit I’ve seen of the show Phil is not motivated by money but instead wants to spread the word of the bible and his belief in Jesus.
Of course Phil has a right to free speech but that does not mean freedom from consequences. A&E can and should make whatever decision they feel is best for their network. Honestly I feel pretty bad for them in this whole thing. A 3rd rate cable network gets a big hit and now it’s becoming a PR nightmare without a way to keep everyone happy.
I think Duck Dynasty will be fine in some form or another. Unlike Paula Dean (again, who is suprised) the majority of their audience either share similar views, are not entirely opposed to them or at least have an old racist uncle whose views they tolerate.
As a final thought this might just be manufactured PR to drum up attention for the upcoming season of Duck Dynasty.
What do you think about this whole mess?
More fool who watch it.
