As you may or may not know Road Warrior and I had a bet that we would each lose 15 pounds by Dec 3. Well, it’s December 3rd and did we do it? Am I 15 pounds skinnier? Did I make it from 185 to 170 lbs?
Here’s what happened.
Mrs Jarhead and I decided we wanted to lose weight and thought we’d use the Weight Watchers program as a team effort. I told Road Warrior and he said he wanted to join in for the same goal: 15 pounds. To spice it up a little we decided to place a friendly $50 wager on it in the form of, “The loser has to buy the winner a knife.” If both of us reached our weight loss goal we’re both winners. If neither of us did we’d both write a check to the hated PETA foundation for $50 a piece. That set the ground rules.
15 lbs may not seem like a lot of weight, but I’ve got to tell you there were a lot of hungry moments during the four months we were doing it. I ate more fruit and veggies than I ever have before and sure enough, the weight started to come off. I also worked out using Crossfit and weight training as my favorite exercises. I found that at 50 years old the weight comes off a lot harder than when I was 30, that’s for sure.
The biggest challenge was placing the goal so close to Thanksgiving. How dumb was that? But Mrs Jarhead and I stayed the course as much as possible and didn’t over do it at the dinner table.
There were up and downs, but in this case there were more downs.
So on December third I weighed in at 169.8 pounds. Exactly where I wanted to be.
Road Warrior on the other hand, didn’t quite pull it off. I knew he’d have a real tough time because his wife was pregnant and it can be tough for a guy to lose weight when his wife is expecting. He lost ten pounds instead of the fifteen he was shooting for. Still a notable achievement.
Instead of asking for the knife I told him I’d give him until the end of January to lose that last five pounds and he agreed. If he’s still carrying that extra five around then I’ll him up for that knife!
At this point in my fitness I’ve decided to coast through New Years, then try and get down to 165 while upping my Crossfit and aerobic capacity. I like to set little goals like this for myself to keep things interesting and to stay focused.
How about it… anybody out there want to join me in losing five (or more) pounds after the New Year? Start thinking about that resolution and join me in my fitness quest.
