Sometimes we don’t see trash bags as having any other uses than to put our garbage in. But trash bags actually have a lot of uses especially for emergency and survival situations. It could save your life and the life your family.
Here are the different survival uses of trash bags:
1. Collection/Storage
A trash bag is a good container/storage for foods, water, and other collected goods.
You can use trash bags to scoop water from streams or any place where there is a water source. A trash bag is also a good storage for food, it is spacious and you can put a lot in it. Storing food in a trash bag is safer than storing it in an uncovered container or in a container that is potentially contaminated. You can easily seal a trash bag by twisting or tying a not on top of it.
2. Emergency Rope
Trash bags can be used as ropes; all you have to do is cut it into strips and then braid the strips to make a rope or cord. It’s pretty sturdy too.

Waterproof Bandage
Trash bags can be used for medical purposes also, but make sure that they are clean before using it. Use trash bags as a waterproof bandage; use it to cover your bandage to protect it from outside moisture and to avoid contamination.
Ward Off Hypothermia
You can ward off hypothermia with the use of a trash bag because it can hold in heat really well. Cut holes for your head and arms so that your can wear the bag or you can drape it over your body.
Cold Compress
To use a trash bag for cold compress just fill it with snow, ice, or cold water then seal off the bag with duct tape.

Tourniquet
Another medical use of a trash bag is a makeshift tourniquet. Although it may not be the best thing for a long term use, it is still important especially when you don’t have anything else to use.
Ground Cover
When you’re out there in the wild it is important to keep your body warm. Use trash bags to keep your body away from moisture and from the cold ground; by doing this you can avoid hypothermia and you will have a great chance to survive in the wild.
Waterproof Your Gear and Stuff
Use trash bags to protect your things from getting wet. You can cover your packs with a trash bag or your shoes when you are going to walk through streams. You can also use it as a rain jacket or a poncho.
Makeshift Shelters
You can turn trash bags into makeshift shelters such as tarp tent, tube tent, or any other tent style shelters.
Capturing Food
You can use a trash bag to capture or catch animals in the wild for food. If you don’t have a fish net or a fishing rod you can use trash bags as an alternative in catching fish.
Sleeping bag/mattress or pillow
You can turn a trash bag into a sleeping bag or a pillow. How? Just fill it with leaves, packing peanuts, clothes, etc. Fill the bag until it is good for you to use as a pillow or bed.
