Whether you are an impulsive traveler or a well planned one, disasters can strike any moment on your trip. Many people say that it is best to avoid thinking about such things on a trip, but it is always good to be safe than sorry in a foreign land. People usually keep in mind the simplest and silliest of things to take and pack on their trip, but miss out on some of the most important things.
Listed below are some common travel disasters and the ways of coping up with them:
Not finding your passport
Good lord! This is terrible on an international trip. Just imagine your condition when you open the small travel kit and find the passport missing from there. It can either be the case of lost passport or stolen passport. Both the issues are equally grave. Before calling the police or going to the local embassy, search the place thoroughly if by chance you misplaced it somewhere. In case you do not find it rush to the police for help and then to the embassy. You might be given an emergency passport with limited validity. On returning to the US, you have to apply for a new passport from the passport office.
Obtaining an emergency passport will require some documents and it is always recommended to carry these with you. Many people have scanned copies of all their valuable documents on their phones, laptops or sent on their email ids. It is easier to get print outs of the documents and avail the emergency passport. An application fee in US dollars is also required. Also try and keep a photocopy of your passport with a friend or relative at home and carry a copy yourself. This acts as a document of proof for your lost or stolen passport.
Lost luggage
This is not new and many passengers have been victims of the same. When you stand in the queue waiting for your luggage to arrive, you always have a fear in your mind. And when you see that the last person picks up his bag and yours has not arrived, you can be sure that your luggage is lost. It is needless to say that the situation will make you nervous to the core and you will lose the capacity to think clearly.
Most of the airlines provide a baggage claim ticket. Make sure that these tickets are handled properly and not lost. You don’t know when you might need them. There is a baggage claim area in the airport and you will need to fill out a form with all the details of the things inside the bag. It might happen that the baggage was put on a wrong plane or that it arrived late and you might be lucky in getting it soon. It is recommended to never put expensive valuables in the luggage. Also keep a dress handy in your hand luggage so that you can change in the time your luggage is found. Never keep the travel documents and currencies in the luggage as well. Mention your name and address on the luggage in clear handwriting so that if it is lost and found, it can be delivered to you.
Disasters can happen on a trip. Instead of worrying and getting panicked, keep your cool and think practically. Things will definitely be sorted out soon.
