(Before It's News)

All of this talk of bugging out. Granted in some scenarios it may be your only option but shouldn’t your home be your bug in location? Thoughts?

  • Depends where your house is. If it is at ground zero or in the city, yes I would have another bugout place to go. I live in the country, we have a deep well, wood burner and a few months of food(plus 6 months worth of freeze dried food). We have deer, rivers with fish and plenty of fowl and small game for food. Pretty sure Our bug out with consist of securing our house and getting gas for our generator(if needed)
  • Sure, if you can safely remain there but in the event of some kind of natural disaster that may not be an option. Otherwise I’d say staying put is the best thing to do unless your life is in jeopardy because of looting mobs or some invading force.
  • I think if the world is ever fubar, staying on the move will be the only option. All books, movies, and tv shows have covered pretty much every scenario and it’s never safe anywhere forever. Temporary shelter is the best we can hope for and I’d rather be on my feet than be forced out when I’m not ready.
  • I agree with some of the above mentioned reasons for staying & others for leaving..if a natural cause such as storm etc. is reason for prolonged outage I like others am prepared to stay in,I like the 3rd little pig built my house of brick..but if projected to take longer then the 2wks that the grid shut down in 03 or 06 then we have made provisions for off site where natural boundaries, fresh water sources (both lake & well),as well as fertile hunting ground,& fishing are within a 1 tank trip.. I think a very common issue with most is believing a ton of gadgets,& gear are transportable on foot but these same people do no walking or hiking with FULL PACKS to see what their actual CAPABILITIES ARE CURRENTLY TO “HUMP OUT” THIS EQUIPMENT THEY SPENT THEIR LIFE SAVING TO ACQUIRE..My family have been hunting, fishing, camping,& hiking our entire lives it worries me that a large majority of people who think they are prepared have never slept out under the stars, gone anywhere accept the grocery store to procure even one meal for the day, never baited a hook,a trap, gutted much less butchered wild game, some haven’t even cooked on a stove let alone over a fire that they prepared (make a fire in the rain when it DOESN’T MATTER,& tell me if your eating that day depended on that fire & so did your water because your only water source NEEDED TO BE BOILED could you do it. ) LET ME STATE THIS OUT RIGHT,I AM NOT BASHING ANY ONE I AM ONLY TRYING TO ENCOURAGE EVERYONE TO GET OUT AND GET FIELD TIME WITH THEIR EQUIPMENT BEFORE YOU HAVE TO USE IT AND FIND OUT YOU CAN’T.
  • I live I’m a large and already dangerous city. It the SHTF, my best option is to get out within the first 24 hours. My plan is to be moving by 4am the morning after it goes to Hell, sooner if necessary, but I think 4am will give the night time trouble time to die down and I can be well on my way before the next morning trouble starts.
  • in a country setting yes, i wouldn’t bug in in a major population center
  • As in real estate its location location. I would bug out in mine. Over developed sub divisions are ok for 48 hrs. Then time to get out of dodge as panic sets in.
  • I’m in an apartment spitting distance from Seattle. We have neighbors we don’t entirely trust. They steal our firewood off our patio. There is almost zero foragable food here (pine and dandelion; some feddleheads in the spring; blackberry in the fall), and nothing to kill for meat but squirrel and crow (and said neighbors’s dogs ). Nearest fresh water is stagnant and full of a home renovation’s castoffs. We have supplies for about two month shelter in place, but if we’re talking long term: We’re out.
  • This why I bought our homestead…it is our castle and last stand in many scenarios…
  • My house will be the center point for trading in the area.
  • That’s why I moved out of the city.
