Michigan – -(Ammoland.com)- Who is this man?!?  This is State Senator Rick Jones (Republican from Grand Ledge).  Rick Jones in the chairman of the State Senate Judiciary Committee.  WE NEED YOU TO CALL HIM.  Read on for more details, or skip to the Call to Action at the bottom of this email, if you’d like.

First, a quick civics lesson: Before a Bill is addressed on the floor of either the State House or the Senate, it usually goes through one of the chamber’s standing committees.  These committees are headed by chairperson, who (for lack of better terms) get to be little dictators of their committees.  The chairperson get to decide which bills the committee will address, when, and which bills the committee will ignore (pigeonhole).

MOC has been pushing two bills which will reform the definition and handling of “Brandishing” in Michigan, for the better.  Don’t believe us? Read the text of the bills yourself: HB 4160 (Johnson, Republican from Clare), HB 4161 (Hughes, Republican from Montague).  Like last session, these bills received overwhelming, bipartisan support in the State House — both passing with majorities capable of overriding a veto.

Where are HB 4160 and HB 4161?  Well, they are sitting the exact same place they have been for the past month: In Senator Rick Jone’s Committee — the Senate Judiciary Committee.  Since then we have seen other pro-gun legislation go into his committee and be passed out.  However, we have yet to see HB 4160 and HB 4161 to come up.  They haven’t even been put on an agenda.  We are a bit disappointed because we were told the the Senate Majority Leader would help ensure these bills made their way quickly through the Senate. Here’s where you come in…

CALL TO ACTION

Senator Rick Jones needs to hear from you!

  1. Call Senator Jones office at (517) 373-3447 or, if you prefer, email him.
  2. Let the staffer that answers the phone know that you would like to talk to (or leave a voice mail for) the person who handles legislative matters in the Judiciary Committee.
  3. Ask the person to ask Senator Jones to hear HB 4160 and HB 4161.  If you don’t know what to say, consider saying this:

I heard from Michigan Open Carry, Inc. that HB 4160 and HB 4161 are sitting in the Senate Judiciary Committee. These bills would provide bi-partisan, non-controversial, reform and clarification to the State’s brandishing law.  These clarifications would not only help people who openly carry, but it would also help law enforcement, prosecutors, and judges better understand the law.  As a former law enforcement officer, I can imagine Senator Jones appreciates giving clear instructions to law enforcement on what the laws mean.  These bills will accomplish that.  I hope Senator Jones will put HB 4160 and HB 4161 on the agenda immediately.

That’s it!  Again, thank you for your time.  Your phone calls (believe it or not) do make the difference in many ways.

Once again, we at Michigan Open Carry, Inc’s legislative team would like to thank Representatives Johnson and Hughes for sponsoring this legislation.

Most appreciative for your time and support,

Phillip Hofmeister
President
