Covington VA --(Ammoland.com)- Delegate Rich Anderson put in a bill, HB 1673, to protect Virginia’s law-abiding citizens from an ever-growing government surveillance overreach using automatic license-plate readers and other devices. Senator Chap Petersen has a matching Senate bill: SB 965.

The BATFE had considered using automated license plate readers at gun shows to get information on the attendees. Supposedly they never implemented the idea, but the concept is scary and could be used for other activities as well.

HB 1673 and SB 965 passed virtually unanimously in both the Senate and the House, but the Governor decided to change the bills any how. His changes dramatically increase how long the police can keep information from such surveillance when no evidence of criminal activity is found. The bills allowed 7 days, but the Governor wants 60 days! McAuliffe also exempted all non-license-plate-reader surveillance techniques from the law.

The Governor is in love with a big, all-powerful government. His changes are good for a police state, but they are not so good if you happen to value your personal liberty.

We need to get the General Assembly to reject the Governor’s changes.
