Fall River, KS -(AmmoLand.com)- We had a bunch of kids who recently completed their hunter education class join us for some shotgun training and a controlled pheasant hunt to reinforce their hunter education training and get them ready for the upcoming upland season.

First Hunt events are targeted to youths who have recently completed a Hunter Education class and have not yet hunted. Time is spent with instructors learning proper shotgun handling and safety and honing their shooting skills before venturing afield to hunt.

The hunt is a controlled hunt with pheasants being placed in bird launchers. A hunt master and mentor for each new hunter then follow trained hunting dogs as they work the field to find the birds. When a dog goes on point, the new hunters are coached into position for the shot.

All the while they are walking the field, the hunt master and mentors are coaching the new hunters on the safe and proper way to carry their shotgun, and what to look for as they walk the field.

Once the hunt is over, the new hunters are taught to field dress their birds and given tips on how to prepare them for the table.

We want to thank all of the volunteers who helped make this event a success. Special thanks go to the Ringneck Rustlers Chapter of Pheasants Forever for providing the birds for the hunt and to Cabela’s for providing the ammunition and caps for all of the new hunters.

First Hunt events have received support from the Kansas State Rifle Association, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, Chisholm Trail Chapter of SCI, Justin Corbet Memorial Shooting Sports Foundation, KS National Wild Turkey Federation Super Fund, Keeper of the Plains Chapter of Quail Forever and the Ringneck Rustlers Chapter of Pheasants Forever.

About Pass It On – Outdoor Mentors:

Pass It On – Outdoor Mentors is a Wichita, Kansas-based national organization dedicated to providing children with mentors who will share with them the experiences of traditional outdoor activities. The heart of the group’s mission is to give children opportunities to connect with nature that they more than likely won’t have without a mentor showing them the way. Partnering with organizations with like-minded conservation and youth participation efforts like Big Brothers Big Sisters, Pheasants Forever, the National Shooting Sports Foundation, Delta Waterfowl, the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation and the National Wild Turkey Federation, among others, volunteers with a passion for the outdoors can give a child the chance to go fish, hunt, or simply spend time in the fields with a caring adult.
