South Dakota -(Ammoland.com)- This past year, the Game, Fish and Parks Department (GFP) created a ‘Metro Zone’ for Canada Goose Hunting in the area surrounding Sioux Falls.
This zone is part of the Unit 2 Canada Goose Hunting Unit and has a later closing date, Feb. 14, than surrounding areas.
“This area winters a few thousand Canada geese and the later season date creates a unique opportunity for waterfowl hunters,” said GFP Region 3 Supervisor, Emmett Keyser.
GFP also worked with several area landowners to create multiple Controlled Hunting Access Program (CHAPs) that allow access to harvested crop fields. Hunters are able to reserve a spot to hunt on select CHAP areas in this Metro Goose Zone by going to http://gfp.sd.gov/wildlife/private-land/chap.aspx.
As a convenience for hunters and landowners, the CHAPs system allows hunters to reserve permission to hunt, up to 8 days in advance. Once a reservation is made, hunters need to print off their permission slip. There will be a check-in box located near a designated parking area on the CHAP property for hunters to drop the slip off on the day of the hunt. Hunters should retain half of the permission slip as proof of permission until they have completed their day’s hunt.
