New Report: Sabotaging America's Power Grid Is Far Easier Than We Were Told

Hackers wanting to sabotage the US power grid or other critical infrastructure can do so with a simple Internet search, primarily because some critical systems are outdated and lack even password protection, an NBC News investigation has found.

The shocking findings mean that dams, traffic controls, stadiums and America’s electricity are in far greater peril than previously thought.

The weakness was underscored when it was discovered that Hamid Firoozi, an Iranian hacker working for the Islamic Revolution Guard Corps, was able to gain access to a dam in New York with a legal search engine, the network found. Firoozi has been charged with hacking the Bowman Avenue Dam in New York in 2013.

It is believed he and his fellow hackers were experimenting with the system to plan for something far bigger.

“This stuff has been happening undetected for years, and now this is one of the first times that it’s surfaced publicly,” former F.B.I. computer crime investigator Mike Bazzel said. “We’re getting close to a threshold where something must be done. The more this type of activity becomes popular and well-known, it will get worse before it gets better.”

  • This is a valid concern that is getting more and more media coverage. Ultimately, we all need to be prepared to protect ourselves and our families for interruptions in electrical service. Such interruptions could occur from a host of reasons; EMP, cyber attack, solar activity (CME) or the more likely source, storms. For families that rely on a well for their water, lack of electrical service is a serious problem since well pumps won’t work without power. However, there is a backup tool available that allows water to be drawn from a well without power and without having to remove the pump called the Emergency Well Tube (www.emergencywelltube.com). Hopefully none of us ever experiences a worst case scenario to need a tool like this, but it’s a good idea to prepare for the worst and hope for the best.

  • Good article, but be CAREFUL with the advertising link “Get free backup electricity…” where it says:

“#5: Generates Permanent Power — The unit provides 1800 watts of electricity at peak power…”

Not an outright lie, but VERY DECEPTIVE (the battery MAYBE provides 1800 watts through an inverter, but only for a VERY SHORT TIME, since it charges at only 100 watts with one panel). The product MAY be OK if you understand it’s limitations. And what is “permanent power”? See also:

Solutions-From-Science say it’s their creation, so don’t confuse it with the DURACELL POWERSOURCE 1800 which is a UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) device.
