For the Last Time, Campus Carry Does NOT Lead to More Sexual Assaults

AUSTIN, Texas -(Ammoland.com)- During a September 24 panel discussion at the 2016 Texas Tribune Festival, Steven Goode, chair of the University of Texas at Austin campus carry policy working group, defended the group’s conclusion that “the evidence does not in any way support the claim of a causal link between campus carry and an increased rate of sexual assault,” by noting that statistics showing that college-related sexual assaults went up in Utah after that state legalized campus carry were skewed by a spate of sexual assaults at private universities that do not allow campus carry.
Likewise, Students for Concealed Carry (SCC) has pointed out time and time again that, after a combined total of approximately 2,000 semesters of campus carry on approximately 200 U.S. college campuses, no campus-carry college has reported an instance of an armed concealed handgun license holder being the perpetrator (or victim) of an on-campus sexual assault.
However, despite such readily available facts and statistics, the argument that campus carry leads to more sexual assaults continues to rear its ugly head as states like Wisconsin and Georgia work to pass their own campus carry laws.
Brian Bensimon, Southwest regional director for SCC, commented:
Opponents of campus carry want to point to a smoking gun that proves that campus carry leads to more crime on college campuses; however, that smoking gun doesn’t exist.
Not one of the U.S. colleges that allow campus carry has reported a resulting assault, suicide attempt, or fatality. Those results aren’t a fluke—they’re in keeping with the preponderance of peer-reviewed studies on licensed concealed carry, almost all of which conclude that the licensed carry of handguns cannot be shown to lead to an increase in violent crime.
If there were evidence that campus carry leads to an increase in sexual assaults, UT-Austin’s campus carry policy working group—which comprised eighteen opponents of the law, including several professional researchers—would have found it.
