I saw the ad Thursday night and could not believe it. It was so cynical. I tried but could not find the ad and I try not to link to Youtube. It purports to be from the Youth Development section/program of USA Basketball.
Here is the website for this cynical program. A highlight or two:
USA Basketball Skills Development Camps allow athletes to improve fundamental skills and become better players through on-court training and off-court educational sessions!
I looked for an appropriate disclaimer – since I’m a lawyer I ought to be able to write one. How about this:
Virtually none of you young people, guys or gals, will ever have a chance to play in the Olympic games EVER unless you become an NBA star!
It’s cynical for USA Basketball to even have a youth development program. Now there are national teams (World University games for example) where you do not have to be an NBA player to play. Maybe try for that, kids. Better yet parents and coaches, just stay away from USA Basketball Youth Development programs and camps until there is at least an amateur division for basketball, both men’s and women’s, in the Olympic Games. And remember, NOT ONE DIME for IOC or USOC, either. Support an untainted sport or that Olympic hopeful down the street instead.
