An anonymous US official is reporting Syria’s Assad regime is weaponizing sarin gas, a deadly chemical weapon, according to Wired. Such threats have been reported before, but Wired’s source claims the threat is serious, saying all that remains is for Assad soldiers to load the weaponized gas onto planes and missiles.
The Obama administration repeated its warning to Syria to not use chemical weapons, though it gave no details of what a retaliation would look like. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said the use of chemical weapons would be a “red line” for American action.
The US isn’t the only country concerned. Turkey has requested NATO Patriot missile interceptors to be deployed near the Syrian-Turkish border to intercept any stray missiles aimed at Syrian rebels near Turkey’s border, if a chemical attack were to occur. Israel, too, has been talking with Jordan for their consent to possibly attack Syrian chemical sites.
The UN, as well, has withdrawn all non-essential staff out of Damascus and Egyptian flights to Syria have been turned around.
