Kenyans whose shopping mall was attacked by Islamists reportedly linked to the bloodthirsty al-Shabaab terror organization now are facing the prospect that the perpetrators of the assault that killed dozens of Christians likely escaped and may be reorganizing for another attack, according to local reports.
The Kenyan Red Cross has said an estimated 39 people remain missing after there were at least 67 fatalities from the Sept. 21 attack on the Westgate mall.
Reports have confirmed that the terrorists ordered Muslims to leave the mall, and then started killing those left behind. Documentation includes reports of torture and other atrocities blamed on the Islamic attackers.
Now according to CitizenNews in Kenya, there is the possibility that the attackers knew the mall so well they knew of – and possibly used – an escape tunnel that leads under the mall’s parking lot to another establishment about 100 yards away.
According to the CitizenNews investigation, that leaves unanswered the questions about whether the terrorists now are roaming free and what they might be planning next.
Reports indicate the terrorists had sublet a shop in the mall and from there staged their deadly assault on innocent victims. They also reportedly controlled lighting in the mall, creating a handicap for authorities who would occasionally simply be left in the dark.
Eight suspects are being questioned, but three others that were questioned already have been released, according to Interior Secretary Joseph Ole Lenku.
According to the Kenyan Post, detectives now are saying the al-Shabaab terrorists likely escaped through the tunnel from Westgate Mall to the nearby Nakummatt Ukay Mall.
