As someone with a foreign-service specialization in Russia, let me try to clean your glasses for your. The KGB doesn’t exist any more because… they renamed it the FSB. Same vicious secret police, different acronym. There is actually MORE religious persecution in Russia these days than there was a couple of decades ago. And yes, gulags are alive and well.
As for flying commercial aircraft all over Russia, I can only conclude that you’re lying, because no sane person does that more than once, unless he’s got a gun pointed at his head. On international flights, Aeroflot is required to comply with international law, but on domestic flights anything goes–literally. I know a US Senate-staffer who once took an internal Aeroflot flight as part of an official visit, and the pilot opened a bottle of vodka and was passing it around the plane, everyone taking a swig–including the whole crew–until it was empty. (Btw that’s typical vodka-drinking, Russian-style. Their vodka bottles are not resealable, except for the ones they export.) Domestic flights crash all the time, often because they’re several hundred percent over the max weight-limit, having crammed on board too many people and all their luggage and pets (sometimes even their goats, no joke!!!); and when they don’t actually crash, they’re generally the most terrifying experience you’ll ever have in your life. Ask anybody who’s gone to Russia to adopt children, and had to take an intra-Russia flight!
