Being head-butted by your husband is a pretty good sign that you shouldn’t be married. But apparently Chad Johnson doesn’t think so.
Last month, Evelyn Lozada filed for divorce from the ex-NFL star, just three days after Johnson allegedly head-butted her during an argument. Johnson wants to work things out and is refusing to sign Lozada’s divorce papers, TMZ reports.
Fortunately for Lozada, she probably won’t need his signature.
After the alleged head-butting incident last month, Johnson was arrested for domestic violence. Three days later, Lozada filed for divorce. The couple had only been married for six weeks.
Since then, Johnson has reportedly gone to great lengths to patch things up with Lozada, including having her face tattooed on his leg.
While Johnson may be able to forestall the inevitable, refusing to sign divorce papers isn’t an effective long-term game plan. In Florida, where Lozada filed her paperwork, a divorce can be finalized without the other spouse’s consent, as long it’s approved by a judge.
If the couple lived in Georgia, Johnson would probably be in the same boat. To obtain a divorce in Georgia, you don’t need your spouse’s consent. You don’t even need to know where your spouse is.
As long as you meet certain requirements, your divorce can be finalized without your spouse’s consent. You must be legally married, be separated, and you must be either be a resident of Georgia or have lived in the state for the past six months. Even if you don’t know where your spouse currently resides, you can serve process through publication in a newspaper.
According to TMZ, Lozada is intent on finalizing the divorce and moving on with her life. Johnson may want to start looking into tattoo removal.
