The drunk tank is already scary enough. Imagine landing in it while wearing the Christmas sweater your grandma knitted for you. You’re sure to be a big hit with your cellmates.
Georgia law enforcement will be on the lookout for drunken drivers this holiday season. So if you plan on drinking at holiday parties, you should also have a plan to get home safely.
Holiday drinks like mulled cider and spiked eggnog can be dangerous. The sweetness often masks the taste of alcohol, making the drinks go down a little too easy. But the alcohol has a tendency to sneak up on you.
If you imbibe this holiday season, it’s in your best interest to avoid driving. Remember to designate a driver. Maybe you and your friend or significant other could trade off duties from party to party.
If no one wants to be DD, call a taxi. Cab fare is small change compared to DUI penalties. A first-time DUI is punishable by a maximum fine of $1,000, up to 12 months in prison, at least 40 hours of community service, and the completion of an alcohol or drug use risk reduction program.
Besides calling a cab, designating a driver, or taking the bus, there’s a lesser known alternative to driving drunk. The National Traffic Safety Administration has created a listing of all safe ride programs in Georgia.
For a fee, the programs provide a sober driver to get you and your car home safe. Find one in your area and save the number in your phone. That way you’ll always have it on you.
If you do end up in the drunk tank, however, you’ll want to talk to a DUI attorney. Have a safe and happy holiday season.
