(Before It's News)
During the 2013 Fourth of July holiday weekend in Los Angeles County, police made 43% more DUI-related arrests than they did the year before. According to NBC, nearly 500 people were arrested during a 2-day period (from Thursday to Saturday) in Los Angeles County.
The year prior, in 2012, the arrests numbered around 340.
Since our next holiday weekend, Labor Day, is just around the corner, here are 4 tips that you may want to keep in mind if you intend to include alcohol in your holiday plans:

- Know your limits. If you really would prefer to take your own vehicle and don’t plan to drink too much, just make sure to know your limits. Remember that the legal blood alcohol concentration (BAC) limit in California is 0.08%, which still allows for some drinking. You know your body, metabolism, and your limits best, so check out one of these nifty online calculators ahead of time and keep numbers in mind if you’re pounding back more than one. Know when to stop, drink plenty of water, wait it out to be safe, and you should be fine.
- Even if you have a designated driver, be careful. While making plans to buddy-up with a designated driver may be the first step, it’s only the first step of many. Remember to be cautious, and ensure that it’s someone you trust and who you know won’t end up drinking too much. If you randomly pluck a designated driver without knowing them that well, you run the risk of having an unreliable ride.
- Look into ride-sharing apps. While you could call a cab ahead of time or look up local bus or train routes, remember that there are even more options with the recent trend of ride-sharing apps. Ride-sharing can be cheaper and more effective, especially if you’re in an area where there’s a huge demand for cabs.
- Biking? Beware. Remember, while biking may seem casual, California’s biking laws require that bikers follow the same rules on the road that motor vehicles do. This includes biking with traffic, signaling your turns, and not having more than a 0.08% BAC. Because, yes, biking while drunk is also illegal, and the courts may treat it almost exactly as they would a DUI.
One last foolproof tip: don’t drink. Yes, very obvious, but still worth repeating. The only 100% method of avoiding a DUI arrest is to not drink. Find other alternative ways to have fun without getting liquored up on Labor Day weekend.
