Flying to visit friends or relatives for the holidays can be difficult, especially if you will be bringing presents with you. Before flying in the next couple of weeks it’s important to know what you can and cannot bring with you and the best way to travel with presents. This will save you the hassle of having to leave those precious gifts behind.
Don’t Wrap Presents Beforehand
There isn’t a rule that prohibits you wrapping your package. However, if the TSA needs to inspect what’s in it, they will need to unwrap it. This can cause a lot of headache for both you and them. If you can, wait until you get to your destination to wrap your presents. You can also just pack some giftbags and put each present in the bags once you arrive at wherever you are going. It’s a good idea to place soft items you will be checking like giftwrap and breakable gifts in a hard-shell suitcase to lessen the likelihood that they get destroyed on the flight.
Be Aware Of The No Fly List
There are quite a few gifts that you either can’t bring in your carryon or are banned altogether. Liquor needs to be placed in a checked bag. Make sure that it is wrapped very carefully as it can easily get broken. Items like fresh produce, cured meats and several other food related items cannot be brought in from another country. If you want to get your beloved niece or nephew a toy sword or toy gun, these gifts have to be put in your checked baggage and aren’t allowed in your carryon luggage.
Forget Flying With Gifts, Ship Them
Flying with gifts may not be worth all the hassle. Instead of dealing with it, buy gifts online and have them shipped to your loved one’s home. They probably won’t care that you aren’t bringing them with you and might actually be grateful that you are trying to do everything possible to make sure that their gifts arrive safely. Now, if you are worried that you will be getting gifts and will have to fly home with them, you can easily make arrangements to ship them as well. Many places like UPS and FedEx offer home pickup so you probably won’t even have to make a special trip to the post office to ship your gifts back home.
