The re-opening of the U.S. Embassy in Havana and a Cuban embassy in D.C. has led to several tourism developments for travel to Cuba.  Cuba has been on many travelers bucket list for years, and now you can not only travel by land, but there are also Cuba cruises for 2017.  We’ve put together Cuba cruise programs from the most reputable companies in travel.

Cuba Cruises 2017 – Who should you travel with?

One of our top recommended trips is by Globus JourneysCuba by Land and Sea is a new 10 day trip that offers small group departures (never more than 24 travelers,) for a more personalized experience.  This cruise portion of the trip is aboard the MTS Celestyal Crystal, a yacht-like modern design small ship with all the comforts of an upscale vessel. You begin the People-to-People experience with an overnight in Miami at the airport Marriott before a short flight to Havana the following day.  A Havana orientation follows with lunch and discussion at palada, then a short walk to Finca Vigia (Hemingway’s home).

Royal Caribbean Cuba cruises: Royal Caribbean was recently approved for 4 cruises to Cuba.  The first will sail out of Miami on April 19th, 2017 and visit Puerto Costa Maya Mexico and Havana.  The 5 night cruise current has a starting price of $999 per person.  There is a 7 day cruise option out of Tampa on April 20, 2017 visiting Cozumel, Belize City & Havana.   Then there are 2 more 5 nights cruises out of Tampa on May 20th and 29th that visit Key West, Havana, Cuba and Cozumel Mexico.  Cabins are going quickly since there are only select sailings. Please note that the Empress of the Seas is an older ship. It has been completely refurbished, but the cabins are smaller than the more modern ships today.

Norwegian Cruise Line Cuba cruises:  Norwegian also has 4 sailings to Cuba currently scheduled.  The cruise is onboard the NCL Sky cruise ship, which is all inclusive of alcoholic drinks and sodas.  The cruise dates are May 1-5, May 8-12, May 15-19, May 22-26 and May 29th through June 2nd.  Prices start out $799 per person for inside cabins double occupancy.

Star Clipper Cuba cruises:  The Star Flyer has 3 sailings in February – the 4, 11 & 18th.  The ship leaves from Cienfugos, Cuba and visits Cayo Largo, Punta Frances, Maria la Godra, George Town Grand Cayman & Cayo Rico. The Star Flyer has another cruise on December 9th that cruises the Panama Canal.  Leave out of Balboa Panama and transit the Canal, then visit San Andres & Providencia Colombia, follwed by George Town Grand Cayman, Cayman Brac, and ending with an overnight stay in Cienfuegos, Cuba. There is also a 9 night holiday cruise on December 18th, Cienfuegos, Cuba visiting George Town Grand Cayman, Cayo Rico, Cayo Largo, Pinta Frances and ending with an overnight in Havana, Cuba.

Some luxury/premium cruise lines have 1 or 2 sailings scheduled for the spring as well. Oceania Cruises (10 day voyage on March 21st & 31st onboard the Oceania Marina) Regent Seven Seas, & Azarama Club Cruises (March 21st) onboard the Azamara Quest on a 12 night cruise out of Miami visiting Key West, Tampa, New Orleans (2 nights) Cozumel, overnight in Havana and back to Miami.

Silversea Cuba Cruises:  The Silver Sea Explorer has an 11 day cruise on October 6th out of Nassau and visits Havana, Punta Frances, Cienfuegos, Antiago de Cuba, Cartagena, San Blas Isalnd and end in Colon, Panama. The Silver Cloud Expedition ship also has a 12 night cruise from Nassau to Colon on October 3rd, 2018.

Fathom Cruise Line, (owned by Carnival Cruise Corp.) will offer journeys into Cuba that allow travelers to get immersed into the Cuban Culture.  This is currently the only year round option.  Your cultural exchange voyage will begin on the Adonia, a 710-passenger ship set to sail from Miami, which is intended to serve as a comfortable home base throughout your journey.  Onboard the ship you will see Cuban movies, hear Cuban music and sample authentic Cuban cuisine.  The ship offers a pool, gym and full sized library.  Your time on the island is intended to be a true cultural immersion experience – part learning, part sharing, part pure enjoyment, as you get to know the Cuban people face to face.    Fathom cultural exchange trips to Cuba begin at $2,000 per person, excluding Cuba Visa, and Taxes, Fees and Port Expenses and you can secure your spot with a fully-refundable $600 deposit. Volunteer efforts will fall into three categories: education, environment or economic development. Education work might have volunteers working with local teachers to improve English skills of adults, while environmental work might see volunteers working in the fields and planting trees. Economic development would include assisting in the cultivation of cacao plants and organic fertilizer at a nursery and producing artisan chocolates. Training onboard will give anyone the skills they need to succeed on shore.

The ideal traveler to try fathom is someone who might have never cruised before but interested in combining travel experiences with volunteering. Those born between 1980 and 2000 would be most interested according to demographic research.The cruise line also believes the itineraries will attract parents who want to expose their children to new parts of the world and the value of volunteering. Children must be at least eight years of age to cruise on Adonia.  Activities will be more low-keyed than the traditional cruise ship with options like Dominican movies and local food specialties.
