(Before It's News)

destress while travelingTraveling, especially around the holidays, can be stressful. Crowded airports, congested roads and an abundance of people every way can make even the most laid back person have a panic attack. Fortunately there are simple ways to destress while traveling.

Before The Trip

Does making travel plans, packing and getting everything in place make you feel stressed out? You’re not alone. Even before traveling, it’s common to feel stressed and as if you don’t want to actually go on the trip because there’s so much to take care of.

What You Can Do:

One way to keep your cool is to not plan everything at the last minute. Allow yourself enough time to do everything and try not to cram too many things into just a few days. For example, don’t book your plane tickets, pack and figure out your arrangements for your pets all in the same day. Doing so can leave you not feeling accomplished, but stressed out.

Use the services of a professional travel agent. It doesn’t cost you any extra money, and they can help find the best deals and save you time to handle other things instead of hours researching a trip.

Make a packing list.  Don’t over pack and have to pay luggage fees or drag around a heavy suitcase.  Wear comfortable shoes and clothing for traveling.  Pack some essential oils.  There are various oils that help with anything from congestion to nausea and boosting your immune system.  For more information read our blog of the Best Essential Oils While Traveling. Considering making a travel playlist for your I-pod or phone.

Leaving For Your Trip

If doesn’t matter if you are flying, driving or taking a train- any of these scenarios can cause a lot of stress. Between dealing with security, traffic or just trying to find your boarding pass, it’s a lot to take in especially with a sometimes long journey ahead.

What You Can Do:

This time of year is fairly busy no matter where you are going. You can combat this by being prepared and allowing yourself sometime to escape from all of this busyness. If you are going on a plane, arrive at the airport early so you can breeze through security and then find a nice quiet spot to enjoy a cup of coffee. If you are traveling by car, make sure you allow enough time to take a few breaks from driving to stop at a nice restaurant or even just to relax at a rest stop for a bit. If you are traveling by train, take a book and noise cancelling headphones with you and once you are on the train, you can have some quiet time by getting engrossed in a new novel. Make sure to stand up and stretch if your traveling for long periods of time.  Drink plenty of water as well.  Bring snacks with you.  Travel delays happen frequently. Have a protein bar, nuts, pretzels or other snacks that can help you get by.

At Your Actual Destination

Hooray! You’ve finally made it to your destination and you are ready for a relaxing trip. However, things might not go as planned and you could find yourself facing some stress. Whether it be from your in-laws, a burnt turkey or late guests, anything could happen that could make things unpleasant.

What You Can Do:

It’s important to keep the right frame of mind in these situations. If you feel the stress starting to occur, you can always practice some deep breathing exercises or go on a quick walk. You’d be amazed at how leaving a stressful situation for even just a few minutes can make you feel refreshed and better equipped to deal with it upon returning. Try to take time to visit a calming place like a beach or garden. Watch the sunrise or the sunset.
