After the defeat of Napolean in 1815, many of Germany’s treasures were recovered from France. There was therefore a need to build a museum to house all the artwork. Plans were drawn up for a public museum, and the result was The Altes Museum (Old Museum) which is the oldest museum in Berlin and also the most prominent building on the Museum Island. The impressive neo-Classical building was designed by renown German architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel.

The Altes Museum houses the Museum of Antiquities. It features a vast collection of Greek and Roman artifacts – including the world’s finest collection of Greek vases. 

Some of the most interesting collections are the stone sculptures from Greece and Rome.
