Why bypass the metal detector?

I was pulled out of line from a metal detector and told to go through a backscatter. Said no, so they routed me AROUND the metal detector for a pat down. Why on earth? All this did was delay me, separate me from my family and belongings, and skip a proven security step. But the TSA rep was respectful and professional.
