The groping hands of the TSA don’t stop with the bodies of the traveling public, some are actually reaching into the wallets of passengers!
According to a Department of Justice release, Michael Arato, a TSA supervisor at Newark Airport, plead guilty to accepting bribes from employees who were stealing from the public. Between the period of September 2009 to October 2010 Arato allowed a subordinate to steal between $10,000 and $30,000 from unsuspecting passengers in exchange for kick backs. Arato was caught on surveillance video taking about $3,100 in bribes during a three week period in the fall of 2010. Arato also admitted that he, himself, stole money from passengers.
Sentencing is scheduled for May 24, 2011, and the charge Arato plead guilty to carries a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. No word on whether or not he’s been terminated by the TSA.
