(1888PressRelease) Reduction of pollutants may be critical for good health.
Most Americans are concerned about pollution in the air they breathe…what most of us don't realize is that air inside our homes is three times more contaminated than outdoor air! In fact, it is a leading health hazard to humans! The leading culprit? Paints and finishes within our homes. Paints and finishes have been shown to emit low level toxins into the air for years after initial use. The source of these contaminants is known as VOCs or volatile organic compounds. Until recently, these compounds were necessary for proper performance of paint and finishes.
Growing demand among consumers for greener products and new government regulations however, has led to the availability of paints and finishes with low and zero VOCs. Besides posing reduced health risks to homeowners, especially those who have allergy problems or are sensitive to chemicals, these low VOC products reduce toxins that deplete the ozone layer and contaminate groundwater and landfills.
Experts advise homeowners to keep several key factors in mind when painting their homes. First, read the label and product literature. Look for products with the lowest VOC content which will yield the lowest overall health risk. Also, don't buy more product than you need. If you have leftover paint, store tightly or dispose of in a safe, responsible manner. When painting, be sure to circulate fresh air throughout the house to reduce the effect of indoor air contaminants. Finally, when it comes time to clean up, use turpentine, an environmentally-friendly solvent which is excellent for cleaning brushes.
